Most so-called eco-friendly buildings are purely designed and built to be energy efficient which in itself is good but is not sustainable in the long term. We need to be building our houses and buildings out of natural, local materials – it is no use making an eco-friendly house that has materials which are shipped from all over the world and many of the materials are plastic and/or packaged in it.
We don’t have to look to hard to find real eco-friendly houses – houses that were built hundreds of years ago using local, sustainable building materials, using local labour and using localized methods to heat the living spaces. These houses should be used as a starting point for the “new, modern eco-houses” – we are often blinded by technology trying to make the buildings as technical as possible however I am a great believer that simplicity is the better starting point!
Support your local industries, resources and manpower and you are making a difference already!
I am keen to hear your thoughts on eco-friendly building
